The Trislander is unique in aviation as being the only three-engined propeller aircraft with the third engine in the tail.
Developed by the British Britten-Norman company from its world-beating Islander twin transport, the BN2A-III had the same fuselage cross-section and wing and the same Lycoming piston engines. But it was stretched to allow 18 passengers to be carried, each pair of seats having its own entrance door.
The type emerged in 1968 when a long fuselage Islander flew in July 14. The first true Trislander flew on September 11, 1970 and after a few changes to the tail unit it entered smallscale production at the company's factory at Bembridge on the Isle of Wight. Deliveries began in June 1971 and production was switched to the Fairey fcatory at Gosselies in Belgium during 1973. In 1974 the first aircraft with the longer nose of the BN2S Islander flew and this mark was designated BN2A-III-2.
Production looked to have finished with the 94th aircraft in the 1980s, when the company was taken over by Swiss manufacturer Pilatus.
However, with Britten-Norman back in British hands in the early 21st century, it was revealed that the aircraft was to go back into smallscale production for China.
