The Twin Otter was one of Canada's most successful commercial aircraft, with over 800 built. Development of the then-new STOL aircraft began in early 1964, with its first flight taking place on 20th May, 1965. Certified the following year, it first entered service with a Canadian government agency.
A design feature of the DHC-6 was the ability to work the ailerons in unison to enhance STOL performance. The earlier 100 series aircraft were distinguishable by their shorter, blunter noses.
The reconfigured nose and fuselage of the 1968 Series 200 increased onboard storage capacity. The Series 300 of 1969 further increased storage, and introduced more powerful engines. All models could be fitted with skis or floats. Eighteen Twin Otters appeared on the Australian civil register in 2001-2002.
