The SS Bismarck was launched on 20 June 1914 at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg in the presence of the German Emperor William II (Wilhelm II). The Bismarck was intended to serve for the Hamburg-American line, but the construction work was suspended due to World War I. The ship was not finished until after the war on March 1922, and then the Bismarck was handed over to the British. She was renamed Majestic and served under the White Star Line of Liverpool. When commissioned she was the largest liner afloat. In April 1937 she was commissioned as the Caledonia to serve as a training ship for the Navy. The ship was finally scrapped in April 1940 by T.W. Ward & Co. Displacement 56,550 mt full load, length 279 meters, beam 30.5 meters, speed 23 knots.
