The Douglas C-47 Skytrain, also known as the Dakota in RAF service, originated from the civilian Douglas DC-3 airliner. The Allies extensively used it during World War II for troop transport, cargo delivery, paratrooper drops, and towing gliders. The C-47 Skytrain first flew on December 23, 1941. Measuring 64 feet 5 inches in length and having a wingspan of 95 feet 6 inches, it can carry around 28 paratroopers or equivalent cargo. With a range of approximately 2,100 miles, the C-47 operates with two Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp radial engines. This aircraft played crucial roles in operations like the D-Day invasion of Normandy, Operation Market Garden, and the Berlin Airlift. Over 10,000 C-47s were produced, and many remained in service for years after the war.
