• The Lockheed U-2, nicknamed the “Dragon Lady,” has been a cornerstone of intelligence gathering for the United States Air Force (USAF) and NASA since 1955. Lockheed’s Skunk Works, under Clarence “Kelly” Johnson, designed the U-2. The aircraft can fly at altitudes exceeding 70,000 feet (21,300 meters), allowing for day and night, all-weather surveillance over vast areas. Consequently, the U-2 played a pivotal role during the Cold War, performing strategic reconnaissance over the Soviet Union, China, Vietnam, and Cuba.
