Waco CG-4A
Product Details
- The Waco CG-4A played a pivotal role during World War II. Designed by the Waco Aircraft Company, it became the most widely used American troop and cargo glider. Constructed from fabric-covered wood and metal, the CG-4A offered both lightweight and durable qualities. It could transport up to 13 fully equipped troops or heavy equipment like jeeps, quarter-ton trucks, and 75mm howitzers. Aircraft such as the Douglas C-47 Skytrain towed the CG-4A into the air and released it near its destination. Consequently, the glider’s first operational use occurred in July 1943 during the Allied invasion of Sicily. Furthermore, it also took part in the D-Day assault on France in June 1944, along with other significant airborne operations in Europe and the China-Burma-India Theater. Despite being considered expendable in combat, the CG-4A consistently demonstrated its value by delivering troops and equipment behind enemy lines. Additionally, its robust construction and reliable performance made it an essential asset in the Allies’ airborne strategy. Therefore, the Waco CG-4A’s legacy endures as a testament to the importance of aerial logistics and the bravery of the troops it transported.
